The Ladies Section of the Waihi Golf Club achieved a startling response to their imaginative promotion for their “SHE LOVES GOLF” evenings.

Based on Women Beginning Golf, the ladies promoted it through many avenues such as Facebook, and other electronic avenues, as well as through many verbal contacts.

The Section was delighted to receive some 80 responses, and on Thursday evening 67 ladies arrived to give golf a go.

The programme is running for six weeks, from 5pm – 7 pm, with a complimentary glass of wine, with cheese and biscuits in the clubrooms afterwards.

The first night was a huge success, with the ladies divided into three groups, and a very good number of lady club members to advise and assist the attendees.

There was much hilarity and fun, and everyone appeared to enjoy the first evening, and it is hoped that this trend will continue for the remaining sessions.

VETS SECTION REPORT:

On Monday the vets played a Stableford round that worked in conjunction with the greenkeepers verti-draining some holes.

The best player of the day was Francis Gascoigne with a good 41 points. Next was John Saunders with 40 points, the Ken Mustard on 39.

Together on 37 points were Viv Lilley and Bruce Rutter. Then all with 36 points were Allen Smith, Roger Gudsell, Gyan Prole, John Libby, and Di Lewis.

NINE HOLE TUESDAY:

Good conditions brought out a good field for the day’s Stableford haggle. First was Jill Mason with 22 points, while all with 20 points were Elaine Goodwin, John Vautier, and Rex Smith.

With 18 points were Jill Keats, and Tukatara Tangiia, and with 17 points were Jan Ferguson, Christine Mercer, and Lorraine Meyer.

WEDNESDAY LADIES:

In the Stableford haggle, Viv Lilley continued her good form from Monday by tying with Karen Lee for the top scorer with 37 points.

Viv also scored the only two on hole 15. Next in the haggle was Jill Morrison with 36, then Wendy Matutinovich and Desley Rosevear with 35 points.

The Hidden Holes was won with 9 points by the ever-present Edna Connolly!

THURSDAY MEN:

The continuing good weather brought out a god field for the Morning Haggle which was played I two divisions.

In div. one, some how Ted Murray scored 40 points to top the division with Francis Gascoigne next with 39. On 36 was Vince Jones, then on 34 were Ken Mustard, Don Mackay, and Robert Guptill.

In Div. two, Bryce Bevin was the clear winner with 40 points, with Brent Wallace next 35. On 34 were Graham O’Dwyer and Bob Hoggard, while on 33 were Peter Hewitt, Gyan Prole and Earle White.

In the Afternoon Haggle, Damian Dunlop and Eddie Evans both had the top scores of 40 points. Next was David P. Campbell with 39, then Peter Bramble, Andy Roche, and Dave Morris with 37 points. Mike Rose had 36, the on 35 were Alister Cochrane, Rob Page and Greg Bundle.

SATURDAY LADIES:

The day’s haggle was a net medal round, and the best scorers were Anke Hermannsdorfer and Cathrine Blake with nett 71’s.

Next all with 71 were Susan Mustard, Megan Jowsey, Michelle Libby, and Denise Donald. Lyn Egan (Omanu) had nett 75.

Denise Donald scored a two on hole 8, and the Hidden Hiles was shared between Lyn Egan, Jackie Robson, Cathrine Blake, and Jane Wordley.

MEN’S SECTION:

On Saturday the men’s section commenced with their AGM. Andy Roche was re-elected as Men’s Captain, and the present committee was re-elected.

MORNING MEN verses AFTERNOON MEN:

At the conclusion of the AGM the players were mixed between the usual morning players and afternoon players to play for the trophy between the two groups.

After a lot of friendly banter, the final result was a tie with each side having six points. The AFTERNOON TEAM retained the trophy as they are the present holders.

The Stableford haggle held in conjunction with the team’s competition was held in two divisions.

In Division One, David Morris had a great round of 42 points to head off Logan Phillips on 39, and Jason Baldwin with 38. Wilson McGillivary had 37 points and Richard Taitoko with 36, followed by Andrew Keenan, John Libby, and Mark Bryant on 34 points.

In Division Two, Bevin Bryce continued his present good form with 41 points, followed by Chris Spiers with 40. Graham O’Dwyer had 38 points, and Garry Towler37. Then Rex Knight having 36, and Peter Dagg with 35 points.

The MEN’S SHOOTOUT FINAL was held on Sunday. The winner was David Morris, who prevailed over Mark Bryant on the final hole. More details at a later date.
