Tauranga City Council is seeking local artists to contribute to the revitalization of Waitaha Reserve in Welcome Bay by designing and painting murals on the skatepark walls and a new mini skate ramp.
This initiative is part of a broader upgrade to the reserve, which aims to enhance recreational facilities, including the playground, basketball court, and skatepark, with the upgrades scheduled for completion by the end of December 2024.
The selected murals will focus on themes of empowerment, inclusion, and community, specifically aimed at inspiring and encouraging the next generation of female skateboarders.
Artists are invited to interpret these themes creatively, with preference given to those with a connection to the Welcome Bay area.

As part of the ongoing upgrades, the council is committed to creating a welcoming and inclusive environment for all community members. The project also aims to celebrate the stunning natural landscape of the reserve while protecting its cultural and archaeological features.
Work on the skatepark improvements, including the installation of the new mini skate ramp, is expected to begin early next year and be ready for use by February 2025, weather permitting.
Artists interested in applying must submit a one-page concept proposal, a brief budget, a draft timeline for installation, a sketch of their design, a brief artist statement, and a portfolio or links to their social media. This initiative is supported by a $15,000 community grant from the Akarana Community Trust, underscoring the council's commitment to fostering creativity and community engagement in the Welcome Bay area.

I don't see a future for any form of decoration on a skatepark.
No doubt it will be vandalised by those lacking sufficient brain activity to imagine anything outside of gang affiliations and marking their territory.
