The New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi is making significant strides in enhancing safety and efficiency along State Highway 2 between Waihī and Tauranga, with multiple projects currently in progress.
One of the most notable developments is the Takitimu North Link project, which has seen substantial advancements in local road layouts.
Recently completed upgrades at Moffat and Cambridge roads, as well as St Andrews Drive between Bethlehem and Tauriko, are paving the way for a future four-lane expressway beneath these routes.
Looking ahead to the 2024/25 construction season, residents can expect increased activity at three major work sites:
- SH2/Fifteenth Ave: Crews are currently constructing a 120m retaining wall and conducting earthworks to facilitate the connection from Fifteenth Ave to SH29/Takitimu Drive Toll Road (TDTR). This is a crucial step ahead of the Fifteenth Ave bridge construction.
- SH29/Takitimu Drive Toll Road: A major interchange is being developed between Tauriko and Tauranga's Central Business District, aiming to streamline traffic and improve access to the area.
- Minden Road, Te Puna: Significant progress is being made on the new roundabouts and bridge tie-ins at Minden Road, designed to establish a diamond interchange at the western end of the project.
In addition to these major sites, work is also ongoing at several locations, including the construction of bridges at Smiths Farm, Wairoa Awa (River), and Minden Gully.
Near Loop Road on SH2, a large culvert is being constructed as part of the broader project efforts.
With these upgrades, NZTA aims to enhance the safety of one of the Bay of Plenty's key transport corridors while ensuring efficient travel.
