A star-studded shift

Police officers never know who they’ll bump into working the beat on a long weekend in Coromandel Peninsula.

Waikato East constables Roxy Worthington and Jen Hayward were undertaking licensed premise checks at the music hotspot of Coroglen Tavern during Labour weekend when they spotted a familiar Hollywood face.

Jason Momoa happened to be on stage with his band, Oof Tatata, in front of the few-hundred-strong crowd at the tavern on State Highway 25 on Sunday evening, said a police spokesperson in a statement.

“The Aqua Man and Game of Thrones star is a regular visitor to Aotearoa and was reportedly filming in the Coromandel when he popped along to Coroglen.

“The Whitianga-based constables had been deployed to the pub for licensed premise checks for intoxication and to prevent any drink-driving, when they got the chance to snap a pic with the Hollywood heavyweight.

“He’d just come off stage when he stopped for the photo with the duo. The crowd was well behaved and there was a good vibe at the pub, with the band keeping locals and visitors entertained. No issues were reported.”

Roxy and Jen’s celebrity encounter was a highlight in a busy shift that included disorder and family violence incidences and a transportation to Thames, before returning to respond to noise complaints in Tairua.

All part of a shift on the peninsula.
