A fire in a shelter belt ignited after fireworks were allegedly set off in the car park on Beach Rd, Katikati, according to witness Debbie Callaghan.

“We heard a few fireworks let off in the car park at the end of Beach Rd, and now we have a fire in the shelter belt,” she said.

Fire crews from Katikati Volunteer Fire Brigade responded at 5.45pm and were able to extinguish the fire at 6.15pm, a Fire and Emergency, New Zealand spokesperson said.

“Two crews from Katikati responded, extinguished the fire and had left the scene by 7.04pm,” the spokesperson said.

It was at 60 metres when the crews first arrived on the scene.

The fire crews could not confirm the cause of the fire, the spokesperson said.

“Callers reported fireworks were involved but this is not confirmed.”
