Are you grappling with the profound grief and isolation that comes with losing someone to suicide?
Grief Support Services invites you to their Remembrance Picnic on Sunday, November 17, at Te Puna Quarry Park, aimed at fostering community support for those affected by such loss.
“The event aims to provide a comforting space for individuals who have lost loved ones to suicide,” said Grief Support Suicide bereavement support co-ordinator Jeanette Jones.
Jones emphasised the importance of community in recognising and aiding each other through the difficult experience of losing someone to suicide.
Attendees are encouraged to bring their own picnic, including food that evokes comforting memories of their loved ones.
A dedicated remembrance area at the event will allow participants to share photos of those they’ve lost, providing a space for reflection and tribute.
“We’ll have entertainment, a sausage sizzle, and a team of face painters looking forward to creating some fun and happiness.
“Children are welcome with parental discretion, and our team of peer supporters and counsellors will be available to provide informal support.”
Jones said they had previously had an annual tradition of gathering the community for a memorial service around the time of World Suicide Prevention Day, which was observed in September.
“This year, we’re shifting focus to create a supportive environment closer to the Christmas holiday season, where those who have experienced suicide loss can connect and find solace together,” she said.
The remembrance picnic will run from noon to 3pm on Sunday, November 17 at Te Puna Quarry Park in Tauranga. It is free to attend, with donations appreciated.
Grief Support Services, located in Greerton, offers counselling and resources for anyone dealing with grief and loss in the Western Bay of Plenty. They provide individual and family counselling specifically for those impacted by suicide.
“Our suicide bereavement support services are fully funded by Te Whatu Ora – HNZ,” Jones said.
Additionally, they provide WAVES, an eight-week psychoeducational programme, Suicide Loss Support Peers, and suicide loss support groups in Katikati/Waihī Beach, and Pāpāmoa – all facilitated by volunteers with lived experience.
“We believe in communities where no one has to cry alone,” Jones said.
