MetService is forecasting mainly fine weather over the next few days, with some showers expected on Wednesday.
A ridge over the North Island is weakening by Tuesday, while a front from over the Tasman Sea is expected to move onto the southwest of the South Island bringing rain and strong northerly winds there.
Additionally, a low to the east of New Zealand will move southwards on Tuesday, to lie close to the Chatham Islands by the end of the day, bringing rain and strengthening north to northeast winds to the Chatham Islands. However, the risk of severe weather is considered minimal.
On Wednesday the front affecting the South Island should move northwards over the country, bringing a period of rain or showers, followed by strong westerly winds.
At night, another trough from over the Southern Ocean is expected to approach the south of the South Island. Also, the low near the Chatham Islands is forecast to move away to the south. The risk of severe weather is considered minimal.
The trough is expected to move northwards over the South Island on Thursday, and onto the North Island, with a change to colder southerlies following the trough.
Although the trough is expected to bring a period of unsettled weather with rain or showers to many parts of New Zealand, there is minimal risk of severe weather.
On Friday, the trough should move to the north of the North Island, and a south to southwest will cover the country. There is minimal risk of severe weather.
