A section of State Highway 25 is closed after a serious crash. 

"Due to a serious crash, State Highway 25 is closed near Marquet Place in Tairua," said NZTA in a statement.

NZTA advises drivers to follow the directions of emergency services in the area and to expect delays.

A police spokesperson said the main road in Tairua is closed following a serious crash.

"The two-vehicle crash was reported to Police around 5:20 pm.

"One person has been seriously injured.

"Motorists are advised to avoid the area and delay any unnecessary travel."

The spokesperson said detours are in place.
