Construction on Cambridge Rd in preparation for a new signalised intersection with State Highway 29 is now under way.
This work is part of the Tauriko Enabling Works project, a post on the Waikato and Bay of Plenty NZ Transport Agency Facebook page said.
“In order to upgrade the SH29/Cambridge Road intersection with traffic lights, we first need to build a retaining wall on Cambridge Road to ensure the road is safe and wide enough to accommodate future traffic volumes,” the post said.
“Work is now underway installing temporary sheet piles – this involves driving interlocking steel sheets into the ground creating a barrier, supporting the excavation site and resisting soil and water movement.
“This helps stabilise the site before the retaining wall work starts.”
To complete the sheet piling, a short section of the northbound lane on Cambridge Rd, from the SH29 intersection to 563 Cambridge Rd, will be closed from Monday, January 6 until early February.
All Bethlehem-bound vehicles will be required to use alternative routes. The southbound lane will remain open.
NZTA said this work has been timed to minimise disruption by maximising works during the school holidays when traffic is lighter.
“NZTA thanks drivers, local residents and business for their patience and understanding.
“The upgrade of the SH29/Cambridge Road intersection is a key part of the Tauriko Enabling Works project.
“Making it a much safer and more efficient intersection, including a new connection to Whiore Avenue for buses and people walking and cycling and wanting to access Tauriko Business Estate.”

We all know Tauranga drivers are colour blind. So it will still be a parking lot at peak times. Or closed because red light runners having crashes.
Dark brown areas

Love to know what the big dark brown areas are. Better not be raised pedestrian crossings.
Hope you've got a good book!

I wonder if NZTA ever visit the sites for their so-called improvements before deciding what needs to be done. Drivers on the State Highway stopping to let people out of Cambridge Road can cause the tailbacks on the highway, particularly when traffic levels are high. It's called the Accordion Effect. Now NZTA are putting in traffic lights which is going to make this effect permanent. That stretch of highway is going to be far more prone to traffic jams.
In addition, when coming up the hill towards Cambridge Road from the Lakes roundabout, the left hand lane will not be a through-lane, so heavily laden trucks that already have to crawl up the 1:7 gradient hill, will now be forced to make standing starts.
Of course, when we're all sitting in far worse traffic, NZTA will tell us it's caused by something else.
agree with JWJW

I 100% agree with the comments made by JWJW. There should be a through lane for Kaimai bound traffic , but also a free left turn for those coming from the Kaimais onto Cambridge road in an effort to free up the intersection.
Lies

Are NZTA compensating local business who will be losing thousands of dollars due to the lose of traffic passing .
Typical media spin to say everyone is accepting and are showing patience . It is a bare faced lie. I challenge NZTA to say if compensation is being paid .
