Robin Bell is misinformed.(Sun 30th Nov)
American Indians were treated abominably. They were killed mercilessly, women and children burned alive inside their teepees, they were driven from their hunting grounds into barren hills with no food to hunt (they didn't have the concept of 'owning land” which is the only similarity to Maori.) so that 'settlers” could own a piece of land the natives had hunted on for centuries.
Indians were given blankets infected with smallpox literally wiping out thousands. It was the British who first took scalps long before the Indians retaliated and did the same. The soldiers were paid for every Indian Scalp they delivered. This is just part of what they suffered.
Maori were given equal status under British law with the Clause that if they wished to sell their land under the Crown they could if they wished to, which they did many times over. Aboriginal North American's got nothing. Maori asked for protection against other tribes and got it via the Treaty.
Maori have equal opportunities to everyone else, they just have to seize them, and no reason why they can't, the State has provided schools and the same education for everyone. Zero excuses for lack of motivation.

Avenues.

NO POSSIBLE COMPARISON

Nth American Indians had a really rough time, Maori actually lived in a complete 'heaven' like world here in NZ, as has been said before many a Pom realised the error of the way and tried a little different plan here, still ended up with wars, murder of inncent people and so on. The Corwn had every right to stop the meaningless murders from Maori on a rampaging type basis in NZ, it is after all what the majority of Maori wanted anyway.
BLANKETS?

The Indians like the Moari need to give back the blankets if they want the odd bit of land returned. SmallPox was a unavoidable effect of new people arriving in new lands.
no similarity whatsoever

Nth American Indians were indigenous, but maori were not. Also, Maori actually wiped out the race here before them..... just as the Nth American "paleface" tried to do.
Shadowing and scalping

Absolutely no comparison at all here other than the usual suspects float it to support their bull**** grieving claims.Actually if anyone was scalping in USA it would have been American Colonists as they had independence in 1776 from the British.
THE IGNORANCE FROM SOME PEOPLE

Lets educate some ignorant pakeha. The Maori ARE indigenous, they coexisted and lived on the land for hundreds of years before being "discovered" by white people. The moriori weren't wiped out, they were also polynesian. The Maori probably mixed with them and to this day the Maori probably have that lineage in them. You can't forget that technically "Maori" didn't exist when they first settled in NZ, they were still classified as "Polynesian" and the culture developed over time. The Maori fought for their land, whether it meant life or death and the crown couldn't figure out how to beat the Maori. So what do they do? divide and conquer, cunning and sly. The Maori were treated just as poorly, lands were taken and when any of them stood up, they were slaughtered.
