Streets flood in Pāpāmoa

Residents of Dickson Road and Longview Drive woke to find their roads flooded at around 6am.

A heavy downpour of rain this morning has caused flooding in Pāpāmoa

Residents of Dickson Road and Longview Drive woke to find their roads flooded at around 6am.

Local resident Janine Bjerring says the flooding occurred on Dickson Road between Alexander Place and Douglas Place.

"It happened between 5.45am and 6.30am. It (the water) was up to the fence line."

She said the fire service came and unblocked the drains along the road.

"The water drained fairly quickly after the firefighters cleared the drains."

Fire and Emergency New Zealand responded to a car stuck in flood water, according to a spokesperson.

"We responded at 6.45am," the spokesperson said.

A spokesperson for MetService said the rain is expected to continue into the early afternoon.

"It will be a wet afternoon," the spokesperson said.

The flooding at the junction of Dickson Road and Longview Drive was caused by a short period of very heavy rain, Tauranga City Council drainage services manager Radleigh Cairns said.

“The rain peaked at approximately. 25mm an hour that looks to have been in excess of the one in 10-year event the network is designed for.”

Once the rain eased, Cairns said the network could clear the flooded area quickly.

“The level of the Wairakei is currently high and Grant Place weir is fully open to enable excess stormwater to flow to the sea.”

Tauranga City Council advise residents to take care around the outlets at Harrison’s Cut and Grant Place while flow rates are increased, Cairns said.

Once again, the council not doing their job, and keeping the drains clean. We pay enough rates, for what?.......I'm not sure.

Empower yourself

Here’s a thought. If you live in a street that has a flooding history (and you’ will know), wander out and clean the flotsam off the drain grate. Will take you about one minute and everyone in your street will love you for it.
Take some responsibility…and quit it with the blame game.

Clearing cesspits

So NZFE now have to clear cesspits (the taxpayer) to allow flooding to go away, but how can we expect Council to carry out their core stormwater/roading responsibility when they have to pay for the expensive projects like, new museum, new library, more traffic lights and a new council office block - thanks commissioners.

Flooding.

The Council ignores any maintenance issues below Domain Rd. All you have to do is look at the waterways which are filthy. And yes they have erected signs to say that the water is toxic. The grass is a foot long in places. What an embarrassment.
