Time for a tunnel!

Two roads to Auckland, Kaimais or via Waihi. Critical injuries in Waihi crash last night, critical crash on the other route via the Kaimais this morning, 15km road jams into Tauranga on SH2 , 6000 more cars on this road per day compared to just a short time ago.
It is about time the government does their job and build a tunnel through the Kaimais with the longer term goal of linking this to the Waikato expressway.
Tunnels are not overly costly, Iceland has constructed 14 such tunnels, and their population is 400,000. We should be more than capable of doing what Iceland have done.
no to a tunnel - fool !

Tunnels are not always the solution, especially over longer distances. Tunnel fires and accidents inside them are a potential death trap, which could kill hundreds of people in a major event, mostly through oxygen starvation, or carbon-monoxide poisoning. The fresh-air and exhaust/flue requirements - and associated costs - would be massive, and the potential liability HUGE. The requirements for air ventilation of the old Kaimai rail tunnel in the 1970's, would be less than 1/100th of the requirements for a multi-vehicle tunnel in the current era of engineering and legal compliance requirements.
The 'tunnel' concept is always spouted by dreamers with little concept of the engineering or financial requirements to actually make it happen in practice. There are plenty of reasons why it hasn't been done already, and probably never will !!
No tunnel needed

And who could pay for it, and sweep up the debris?
In what year would it arrive and what of the long term pollution flowing into the waterways for years to come?
I respect the idea but what are the common denominators for these crashes?
Do not ignore the fact that NZ roads are a lot different than overseas roads.
To arrive in such a different environment truly requires more driver education and examination. What are the simple Absolute Facts.
Find and fix these factors, and you fix the problem.
However, we humans are not know for our logic since 2019.
