Mainly fine weather ahead

Fine weather is expected to continue this week, with some isolated showers.

A weak front will be moving slowly northwards onto the central North Island on Tuesday, according to a MetService weather update.

"Isolated afternoon and evening thunderstorms are possible about western areas from Auckland to the central high country."

Showers are expected to spread up the east coast.

"Elsewhere, partly cloudy with isolated showers, mainly inland in the afternoon and evening."

In the South Island, early rain is forecast for Canterbury and Marlborough on Tuesday, with isolated showers inland in the afternoon and evening.

MetService said a ridge of high pressure will be building over the South Island but there is minimal risk of broad-scale severe weather affecting New Zealand .

On Wednesday a ridge of high pressure will be covering the South Island, and extending northwards onto the North Island.

A few showers expected in the east of the North Island will be clearing during the day. Scattered afternoon showers are forecast for Northland, but it is expected to be mainly fine weather elsewhere. 

This large high pressure system will be covering New Zealand on Thursday and Friday with fine weather for most areas.

Isolated afternoon showers are forecast from Northland to Waitomo, and about inland Canterbury to Buller on Thursday.

On Friday there may be isolated afternoon showers from Northland to Bay of Plenty, and about inland Canterbury to Buller.
