SH2 night roadworks complete early

Work to rebuild a section of State Highway 2 at night near Snodgrass Rd has finished two weeks ahead of schedule, with the team wrapping things up last week.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi would like to thank people for their patience and contractor Fulton Hogan for their hard work in getting this job completed in less time.

“People are now enjoying a very smooth ride through the Snodgrass Rd area,” said Bay of Plenty system manager Sandra King.

“It’s no small feat. Over the past month, contractors dug up 510 metres of existing road surface, rebuilt each layer, then finished it off with a smooth asphalt surface and brand-new line marking.”

While the Snodgrass Rd work was under way, there were other maintenance activities, including several other chip sealing sites being completed at night.

Due to the sensitive nature of this stretch of state highway, and increasing traffic volumes, rebuilding the road with chip seal is becoming increasingly difficult due to the length of time and temporary speed limits needed to bed in the chip once laid.

Any work on SH2, day or night, causes disruption and NZTA appreciates the impact this has on motorists as crews work hard to maintain and renew this important route.

Except where it ends it's still bad for couple hundred metres by ainsworth Rd and that could have / should have be been part of the original repairs and used up the other 2 weeks smh

Slow work

I am intrigued by this work finishing ahead of schedule. I regularly drive the road and was amazed how little they did each night. This typical of most road works in NZ. Why can't a section be targeted and all fixed quickly. Apata round about will take 18months plus at their current rate. Time = money.

Early?

This debacle has been going on since we've been in Tauranga.
6 long, bloody annoying years while they nibble at the edges achieving nothing.
Competent roading agencies would have multilaned the entire stretch from Tauranga to Waihi in that time.

Roading Debacle

Yes Mumof2 the road where we had restrictions of 30kms each side of the repairs is now a mess, the bitumen has come to the surface with the heat and left the road smooth (now a slippery surface when wet) with small pot holes galore, this needs attention water gets under this we end up with huge pot holes. Accidents waiting to happen. It was nice to have one day with no speed restrictions but now where back to 30 and 50kms along same stretch of road with no visible signs of any work happening apart from a sign informing of works on side road. Perhaps Sunmedia could ask some questions as to what's going on because drivers see no action just a line of road cones again.
