Katikati Primary School is facing uncertainty about the continuation of “vital” schemes to feed students this year.
The school runs its own breakfast club and lunch pack scheme as they are not eligible for the Government’s Healthy School Lunches programme.
In previous years, the schemes have been funded by Apata Group Ltd, which the school is grateful for but a new sponsor is urgently sought this year to continue this work.
“Unfortunately, we now find ourselves in need of a new sponsor to continue this vital programme,” principal Andrea Nicholson said. “Without this crucial support, we face uncertainty in being able to provide this service to our students.”
About 16 loaves of bread are used each day at the breakfast club. Volunteers serve up a selection of toast with avocado, honey, home-made jam, Vegemite and peanut butter.
“These meals help ensure that our students start their day with the energy and focus they need to succeed in the classroom.”
On offer for the lunch packs is a sandwich, fruit, yoghurt, packet of raisins and muesli bar.
Nicholson said any hungry child could come along to the breakfast club, which operates three days a week. They make about 20 lunches daily.
A team of volunteers give their time every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning to make breakfast for the children.
“Some of these volunteers have been with us for over 18 years, and we are incredibly grateful for their ongoing commitment.”
Nicholson was confident that, with help, they could continue to keep the programme.
“We are calling on local businesses and community members to step forward and become a sponsor for our breakfast club and/or lunch pack programme. Your financial support, whether large or small, will directly impact the children of Katikati Primary School and ensure they have the nourishment they need to thrive.”

Between Woolworths, 4 Square and some of the wealthier local 'professional ' type businesses, if they all chipped in, some with product and some with cash to buy more product, it would be sufficient? If I lived there I'd certainly volunteer to help. Well done all of you.
