MetService has issued a Heavy Rain Watch for the northern parts of the North and South Islands, including the Coromandel Peninsula and the Kaimai Range.
"A low to the north of the country directs a humid subtropical flow over New Zealand, bringing heavy rain to parts of the North Island on Monday," a MetService spokesperson said.
"Meanwhile, a front moves over the South Island from the Tasman Sea on Tuesday."
A Heavy Rain Watch has been issued for the Coromandel Peninsula and the Kaimai Range for a period of 18 hours from 10pm, Sunday, February 16 to 4pm, Monday, February 17.
Periods of heavy rain are expected for these regions, and amounts may approach warning criteria.
A Heavy Rain Watch has also been issued for the ranges of the Tasman District northwest of Motueka, for a period of 10 hours from 10pm Monday, February 17, to 8am, Tuesday, February 18.
"Periods of heavy rain, and amounts may approach warning criteria. Streams and rivers may rise rapidly. Surface flooding, slips, and difficult driving conditions are possible."
MetService is advising property owners to clear their drains and gutters to prepare for heavy rain.
"Avoid low-lying areas and drive cautiously."
