Get ready for a fun-filled adventure through Tauranga’s Kōpūrererua Valley this April.

The 2025 Great K Valley Cycle Adventure, taking place on Sunday, April 13, is a unique scavenger hunt on two wheels, where participants dressed up in costumes will explore New Zealand’s largest urban wetland restoration.

Nestled in the heart of urban Tauranga between Bethlehem, Ōtūmoetai, Greerton and Gate Pā, this exciting event combines puzzle-solving, map reading, and clue hunting as you cycle through Kōpūrererua Valley.

Known for its rich history, diverse wildlife, and scenic cycling trails, the valley also holds cultural significance to Ngāi Tamarāwaho.

“We’re encouraging everyone to come in costume, with this year’s theme being ‘Wildlife,’” said Michele Beaton, a member of the Rotary Club of Tauranga Sunrise, which holds the event. “So let your imagination go wild. But keeping safety in mind too!”

Expect some quirky challenges along the way, with fun games designed to keep things lively.

And watch out for the Swamp Monster! Extra points will be awarded to those who can guess the identity of the elusive creature. Last year, former mayor Greg Brownless went undercover in a ghillie suit, playing the role of ‘Swampie,’ leaving participants guessing until the very end.

This year marks the fifth edition of the event, which has become a popular family-friendly occasion.

Teams will earn points for completing tasks, including the costume competition, with exciting prizes for the highest scores. There will also be spot prizes, including a voucher for a children’s bike, thanks to generous sponsors.

In 2023, more than 200 cyclists joined the adventure, and Beaton expects this year’s event to be just as big.

“The event is not only fun but also an opportunity to raise awareness about the historical, ecological, and recreational importance of Kōpūrererua Valley,” she said.

Funds raised will support the Kōpūrererua Valley Rotary Centennial Trust’s annual native plantings, helping to restore the valley’s original vegetation and its role as a vital carbon sink.

Tickets are just $40 for a team of up to six people. On event day, teams can sign in and start their hunt anytime between 10am and 12noon at the 17th Avenue entrance to the valley, next to the skate park.

The hunt ends by 2pm, with prize-giving at 2.30pm, where Tauranga Mayor Mahé Drysdale will speak.
