Tauranga City Council is backing the nationwide Love Food Hate Waste campaign this March to help residents cut grocery costs and reduce household food waste.
Many residents did not realise how much money and environmental damage their food waste caused, Tauranga City Council manager of sustainability and waste Dan Smith said.
“When food waste decomposes in landfills, it produces emissions that contribute to climate change. People can make a big difference by reducing their food waste overall and using their green food scraps kerbside bin for composting instead of their red-lidded bin. Composting food scraps at home is another great option,” Smith said.
Tauranga City Council funds the Waste Management Institute of New Zealand (WasteMinz) through the Waste Levy Fund allocation from the Ministry for the Environment.
All councils contribute to this national fund to support campaigns such as Love Food Hate Waste.
Smith said the council was focused on reducing the amount of waste Tauranga households sent to landfills, through community education and events and providing essential services such as kerbside collections.
Love Food Hate Waste NZ programme manager Sophie Wolland said a little planning could help households cut grocery costs and reduce food waste.
“By making meal planning a weekly habit, households can start to see real savings on their grocery bills while also cutting down on wasted food,” Wolland said.
“It’s a win for the wallet, a win for the environment and an easy way for everyone to play their part in reducing food waste.”
Wolland said thinking about the four Cs was a great place to start when meal planning.
The four Cs are: check your week, check what you’ve got, choose your meals and create your list.
Check your week by identifying who will be home and which days will be the busiest.
Check what food needs to be used in the fridge, freezer and pantry. Choose flexible meals that incorporate leftovers. Create a shopping list and take it along to the supermarket.
More meal planning tools and tips are available on the Love Food Hate Waste website: lovefoodhatewaste.co.nz/do-better-meal-planning.
Tauranga City Council encourages residents to get involved in the campaign and adopt better food-planning habits that will benefit their household budgets and the environment.

When are we going to get rid of this ratepayer dept.
When did the create payers need to be scolded all the time with this?
When are they going to catch up with the science that's been around a long time and stop babbling on about climate change, which doesn't exist?
Time for more cleaning out downtown and stop subsidizing outfits like this with your money. Waste Management Institute of New Zealand. Just another rort on the ratepayer.
posturing, much?

Given the Council's superficial recycling posture, and the Tory government's walking back of any environmental concerns, this is sheer nonsense.
All good

From the spin department what tosh. Are they insinuating that we buy too much groceries and then bin them. . I think the opposite with the cost groceries . I and many don't use the waste food bin. We waste very little and the waste disposer deals with most of the rest. We however are levied for the bins on top of our rates making up amongst the most expensive rates in the country. The council contributes also nonsense its everyone ratepayers and everyone indirectly who contributes a nice word for mandatory rates and levies . We also received the water bill today all on top of the high rates . So we pay for it all regardless of the council spin department that we also ironically pay for too
Yet another example........

........of just why this and most other councils should 'revisit' just what their job is.....it's not this.....how about concentrating on 'core' duties...you (should) know what they are...the grown ups will decide what they eat and why....I guess it's another reason to hire yet more staff and buy a few more peaked caps to 'inform' us of more things we are doing wrong.
Ya know what council?...by and large we couldn't give a rats *** what you think, so wind your neck in and give some thought as to what the people who pay you actually want and cut the nimby BS....
