Update, 9pm: One person has died after a two-vehicle crash on Ōhope Road, Maraetotara, in the Whakatāne District.

The Serious Crash Unit is examining the scene and traffic management remains in place.

Police said enquiries into the circumstances of the crash are ongoing.

Earlier, 7.45pm: Emergency services are at the scene of a serious two-vehicle crash on Ōhope Rd, Maraetotara, in the Whakatāne District.

Police were called about 4.55pm.

A Hato Hone St John spokesperson said two ambulances and a rapid response vehicle were sent to the scene.

The road is closed, with diversions in place.

Motorists should avoid the area if possible.
