Smaller NGOs gain access to mental health fund

Minister for Mental Health Matt Doocey

Smaller non-government organisations (NGOs) will now have better access to the Government’s Mental Health Innovation Fund following a funding threshold change.

Minister for Mental Health Matt Doocey announced the adjustment at the Platform Trust Members Day while speaking to the NGO sector. The change lowers the minimum required for match funding applications from $250,000 to $100,000.

"This fund was created in consultation with NGOs, so it’s important that any changes reflect sector feedback," Doocey said.

"I am pleased to announce today that the lower threshold will allow more NGOs to benefit. The real winners are New Zealanders seeking timely mental health support."

The first round of the fund distributed money to organisations making a tangible impact. MATES in Construction, The Mental Health Foundation, YouthLine, Wellington City Mission, Rotorua Youth One Stop Shop and the Sir John Kirwan Foundation were among the successful applicants. Doocey confirmed more announcements from the first round would follow.

The Government has prioritised reducing mental health and addiction wait times. Doocey emphasised that the initiatives funded so far are easing pressure on the public system by drawing on external workforce resources.

"We are the first Government to introduce specific mental health targets," Doocey said.

"We have a responsibility to explore every option to ensure New Zealanders get mental health support when and where they need it.

"This Government will leave no stone unturned in pursuit of this goal."

The Mental Health Innovation Fund supports projects that deliver faster and better access to mental health services. Lowering the funding threshold will enable more organisations to contribute to that mission.

"It is vital to support NGOs delivering innovative initiatives that enhance mental health support across New Zealand," Doocey said.

"Reducing the financial barrier will help clear the way for more groups to participate in our vision for improved mental health care."

The Government will continue working with the sector to ensure the fund delivers maximum impact. NGOs interested in applying for future funding rounds can find more details through official Government channels.
