Have you got what it takes to be a firefighter? If you want to give back to your community, you probably do.

Katikati Volunteer Fire Brigade is having a family open day on Saturday, March 28, for the public to check out who they are and what they do.

It’s also a recruitment day – and the brigade is seeking important, potential support staff to help with all aspects of the service as well as boots-on-the-ground firefighters.

“There are a lot of people out there who could make great firefighters but haven’t had the chance to check out what’s involved,” said Katikati brigade’s deputy chief Craig Gray. “It’s such a rewarding job – it teaches you a lot of life skills, it’s a good confidence-builder and you gain a new skillset that will serve you for the rest of your life.”

The brigade is also looking for members of all kinds including fully operational, operational and brigade support. Many volunteers, like Gray, have done “a lot of years” and they are always looking for more volunteers.

“It’s always harder getting volunteers these days as people have busy lives ... we always need more people coming through.”

The day includes a mix of education, demonstrations, meet-the-firefighters and fun for families.

A “jaws of life” demonstration will take place. Being in an accident will put people in a heightened state, Gray said, so it’s good to show children things like this.

“It’s also good for children to come though and check out the firefighters in their uniforms so they’re not scared of them. We can look a lot bigger with all our gear on.”

Firefighters will be available to discuss their experiences. There will be station tours and virtual reality headsets showing how quickly fire can spread. The water demonstration will be fun for kids, fire trucks will be on display and a free barbecue is on offer.
