Tauranga barge capsizes, salvage to take some time

A 30m long barge capsized in Bridge Marina, leaving a crane lying in the water.

A tipped barge at Tauranga’s Bridge Marina could take some time to salvage, says council.

About 2.15 pm on Monday, Bay of Plenty Regional staff were notified that a 30m long barge at the marina had capsized, leaving a crane lying in the water, council said on Tuesday.

A spokesperson said today that the council’s role was to monitor and assist.

“The responsibility for containment and recovery sits with the contractor putting together the salvage operation.”

The contractor’s divers are completing an inspection.

“Using video and photo from the scene, they develop a plan for the safe recovery of the barge and crane.”

They will also inspect and report back on any leakage risks.

Absorbent booms have been placed in the area to collect diesel and oil.

The council said about 10 litres of diesel leaked into the harbour.

The spokesperson said as the tides and currents change, small pockets of diesel trapped in the wreck may surface and appear as a sheen.

“At this stage, there is no further leakage.

“Marina security is making regular inspections in the area, noting that the salvage ... could take some time.

"They will need a large crane and location to remove the parts from the water. This will also likely involve a commercial dive team."

Boats and other craft are still being advised to stay clear of the area for safety reasons.

I do query where they get an estimate of only 10ltrs of oil and diesel has leaked. That seems to be but a sniff of the rag for a barge, a crane, 'other' equipment, and the inside of an old barge that is now upside down. The waters through there are very strong tidal so I'd suspect oil/diesel will show up elsewhere than just 10ltr on site. Plus strong undercurrents from tug boats, pilot boats and ships in that area.
I hope Sunlive stays on top of this salvage as an interesting event continues to unfold.

Oh dear!

It looks like the barge has split in two!
I assume there were people working on board at the time, I hope they're ok.
