MyMarathon returns to get hearts racing

Last year, more than 4,000 people took part, collectively clocking up over 165,000 kilometres.

Kiwis are tying their laces for a cause as MyMarathon returns, offering a flexible, fun way to fight heart disease—one kilometre at a time.

Thousands of New Zealanders are expected to hit the pavement this May as the Heart Foundation’s MyMarathon returns for its second year.

The event encourages Kiwis to walk, jog, or run 42 kilometres—or more—throughout the month to raise funds for life-saving heart research.

The free, flexible challenge lets participants cover the distance in their own time and at their own pace, whether they choose to complete it in one day or spread it across four weeks.

Last year, more than 4,000 people took part, collectively clocking up over 165,000 kilometres and raising vital funds to fight heart disease.

“This is the fundraising race where you set the pace. It’s designed for everyone—whether you’re a seasoned runner or just starting out,”  direct fundraising manager at the Heart Foundation Gail McIntyre said.

Participants can sign up as individuals or as part of a team, with family, friends, or even workmates. There are no restrictions on how or where the kilometres are completed—whether it’s on a treadmill, a scenic beach trail, or laps around the local park.

“For many of us, heart disease hits close to home. We all know or love someone who has been affected. MyMarathon makes it easy to do something meaningful while improving your own health,” McIntyre said.

All funds raised go towards heart research in New Zealand, supporting breakthroughs that could prevent families from losing loved ones too soon. Participants are encouraged to share their progress and fundraising pages with friends and whānau to help amplify the impact.

“The best part is that it’s completely free to sign up—all you need is a pair of running shoes and a bit of determination,” said McIntyre.

For those wanting an extra challenge, the 42-kilometre goal isn’t a cap—participants are welcome to go further and test their endurance over the month.

“Whether it’s about personal growth, honouring someone close to your heart, or simply doing your bit for a good cause, MyMarathon is a chance to take meaningful steps—literally,” McIntyre said .

Registrations are now open at heartfoundation.org.nz.
