An elderly man has died after he was dragged by his car around the carpark of a Waihi dump while dropping off his rubbish yesterday.

Waihi Police acting senior sergeant Craig Gilbert confirmed the 84-year-old man died as a result of serious injuries when he was thrown from his vehicle at the Waihi Transfer Station yesterday.

An 84-year-old man died in a freak accident at a Waihi dump.

The man was the second customer of the day at the Hauraki District Council facility at the end of Dean Crescent around 10.15am.

Waihi Volunteer Fire Brigade chief fire officer Moe Stevens says he had never seen anything like it.

'He was leaning out the door looking to go backwards, pushed his foot on the accelerator and fell out the door and the car dragged him around the car park.”

Transfer station member Alan Irvine dialled 111 emergency services when he saw the incident unfold in front of him.

Alan says the man was dragged about a metre by the car before being completely thrown from the vehicle.

He says the man is a regular at the transfer station.

Firefighters were the first to attend to the man before he was transferred to Waikato Hospital by St John ambulance in a serious condition.

District Road Policing Manager, Inspector Marcus Lynam, says Serious Crash Unit investigators are today at the scene on Dean Cres investigating the death.
