Oruahine track closure on Mauao

This closure is to ensure public safety while pest plant control work is undertaken via abseilers above the track.

The Oruahine track on Mauao will be temporarily closed this coming week for maintenance.

With good weather forecast for this week, Tauranga City Council are extending the track closure to allow their maintenance crews to take full advantage of the favourable weather conditions.

The track closure will take place from 7am Tuesday, May 13 until 4pm Friday May 16 2025.

This closure is to ensure public safety while pest plant control work is undertaken via abseilers above the track.

"If you’re climbing to Te Tihi o Mauao (the summit of Mauao), please use the Waikorire or Motukauri tracks instead. Te Ara Tutanga (base track) will remain open throughout," a council spokesperson said.

"If this work is delayed because of weather or other unforeseen circumstances, it may be carried out on another suitable date."

For more information about tracks and locations on Mauao visit www.tauranga.govt.nz/mauao.

Alternatively, you can find other fantastic walks in the city here.

With approximately a million visitors walking up or around the maunga each year, Mauao is currently one of New Zealand’s top scenic walks.

"We appreciate your patience while we undertake these works to help protect a treasured taonga of cultural, historical, spiritual and natural significance."

Whatever happened to good old-fashioned hard, physical slog, pulling things out by hand, using shovels, spades, forks and machetes etc??? Everything's done the easy way, not the money-saving way. :(

Great comments and ideas Bruja and Yadick, and good on you for volunteering to do the work. Don't forget your spades and shovels.
