Tauranga motorists say traffic dividers are causing havoc at a roundabout in Tauriko.
Tauranga City Council contractors have placed traffic dividers around the roundabout intersecting Taurikura Drive, Takitimu Drive/State Highway 36 and Lakes Boulevard.
Some drivers say the new layout is confusing, with dividers restricting motorists from changing lanes on the roundabout, and taking some exits down from two lanes to one.
Colin Poultney, from Ōhauiti, uses the roundabout every day to get to and from work.
“On the first day I went through there, they had these cones everywhere. It confused everyone and people were stopping in the middle of the roundabout. Just absolute chaos,” he said.
Poultney said he hadn’t witnessed any crashes, “but I’ve seen people just run cones over and I’ve seen cars come very close to hitting one another”.
He said it was like the council slapped the cones down and made the road users figure it out.

The changes were related to works between the roundabout and the Taurikura Drive/Whiore Ave intersection. These started on May 26 and were expected to take a year, a council statement said.
More lanes were being added, and the roundabout used to enter Tauranga Crossing would be replaced with a signalised intersection. The council said this would futureproof the route for more traffic as the area grew.
Council head of transport Mike Seabourne told SunLive it had worked closely with its contractor to establish an accelerated programme to get the project completed safely and efficiently.
“Traffic management has been implemented in a way that supports this methodology and the layout of upcoming construction phases on Taurikura Drive.
“We’re aware of challenges drivers are experiencing and have made adjustments on the roundabout, including shifting lane delineators and installing additional signage.”
Seabourne said the council would continue to monitor the situation and look for improvements where feasible.
Other motorists shared their views on the roundabout issue with SunLive.
Kayla - who didn’t want her last name published - said she used the roundabout to get to and from work at Animates on Taurikura Drive.
The first time she used the new layout, it was chaos as people weren’t paying attention to the lane they needed to be in, she said.
Some customers had told her they didn’t see the sign, or it was too late before they noticed it.

“You can clearly see the signs. As long as you’re in the correct lane, and people coming from Rotorua don’t hop in front of you, it’s quite easy just to slip into the right one.”
Kayla said she believed the SH36 roundabout did not need changing.
She viewed the work on intersections around Tauranga Crossing as ”somewhat of a waste".
“A traffic light system might work a little better to get the flow of traffic going better,” Kayla said.

At this stage works were not impacting business, however she said when work began to create the signalised intersection and detours were put in place, it would affect businesses in the area.
Another motorist, who did not want to be named, said when approaching the roundabout from the south, it was a bit painful having all the northbound traffic queueing in one lane at the roundabout.
“Then, when heading the other way later in the day, it is at first confusing knowing which lane to enter to be able to exit south, especially with the pop-up lane markers restricting lane changes.”

“Cones have been used to block off the second lane, so you have to merge beside the State Highway 36 traffic.”
The reader also said they tried to exit Lakes Boulevard in the left lane and had not been able to merge into the roundabout.
“I saw the arrows on the lane indicated that I could turn left or continue straight through the roundabout. However, cones were in the way and I was unable to continue straight, which meant I had to turn left on to State Highway 36 towards Rotorua until I could find a place to U-turn.”
A SunLive reader from the area said they had to go around the roundabout twice as they didn’t understand when to change lanes to enter Taurikura Drive in time.

Must be consultants involved
Posted on 06-06-2025 06:23 | By First Responder
Yup, it's a total mess. Why didn't they just close the far right lane, would have the same affect, without the confusion. Everytime consultants are involved, it equals chaos. To think the Roman's built quality roads 2000 years ago, with no health and safety, no traffic management, no damn cones, no consultants, the world has only gone backwards
Ludicrous - FIX IT

I went through here on Friday last week. What an absolute balls-up!
Traffic blocked all signage, I came from SH29 and the exit to The Lakes shopping center was blocked by orange markers so I had to go round again and this time ended up heading towards Rotorua and had to U turn when it was safe to do so. Exiting from there was easy enough but there was a car stopped in the middle and the elderly driver was quite obviously confused and bam-boozled as to where to go.
The whole layout is ridiculous and if that was designed by road safety engineers or traffic management or whatever they're called they need their butts kicked. There WILL be an accident and someone will pay the price in Court for this shamozle.

Don't forget it is well spend money this is part of the 266 million dollar in a year NZ road cone bullshit👍🏻
Another desk top job.

Just another desktop failure.
Like Redwood Lane.
These designers failed to appreciate the road conditions and how traffic flows. Redwood Lane remains a two-lane road despite all the big truck traffic in the future. Traffic lights coming there and here, and these people seem to have no idea what it takes to start these big guys from wo to go. The best solution at Tauriko would have been to put a concrete cover over the creek and then reform the road. None of this restricting the lanes would have been necessary then. You can be sure there will be no slip lanes for those going up further to the industrial area. Our rates are going up 14% in the industrial area and yet we have to put up with second rate engineering like this. There are better brains in some of the workshops up there.
It looks like….

…a total balls up to me. People have pretty well got the existing setup sorted and now it’s a maze of cones, orange posts and different lane markings. My question is why?
The rotary islands are working perfectly and everyone was happy. A further lane could be constructed without all this. I can only imagine the cost of the safety setup let alone the project. If this is just for a bus lane there will be a huge protest.

Totally agree

A total stuff up. I went there Thursday for the first time in 3 weeks. Confusion, too many stupid plastic sticks, I nearly run into them I had to brake and the car behind me also and close to being tail ended. On second thoughts I should have run over them. Trying to exit the roundabout to go to the crossing shops from the inside lane.
This is taking about a year. What a joke you can build a major highway in this time.
Work on this intersection should ben done at night very little traffic and can get a lot done.
But fix the stupid stick problem. Disney need to be like this during the day.

To say this is 'Just another desktop failure' is a bit on the nose and rude . . . OH, NO, WAIT, You're absolutely spot on right. These pen pushers need to get off their butts and take a drive in the real world and not just in their heads. Nobody in their right mind can say that that's a well thought out design. It's a disaster and an unwarranted accident waiting to happen that'll gridlock the city once again.
To quote Cynical Me, Just another desktop failure.
I know of one serious accident there
Posted on 06-06-2025 09:51 | By AmandaA
Bound to be more accidents !
We went out there last weekend and it was a nightmare. I have always used the left lane coming from 29a to get to shops past the mall (eg Farmers) and it was gone so we continued to Kennedy Road roundabout and go in the back way. Signs are there but its a such a manic area. Although it is a much safer option and will possibly be the detour when needed . I am struggling to see how traffic lights at the mall entrance won't get traffic backed up to the main roundabout SH36 , Lakes Blvd and Taurikura Dr ? . The light sequence will have to change fast to stop this from happening that will make orange/ red light runners an issue so it won't be any safer .
Oh dear

Seems another place to avoid . Already avoid town and now seems getting in and out of the crossing shopping centre has been added to the list. And the whole Tauriko area is not very old so why wasn't it designed better in the first place . Seems there must have been a special on roundabouts then . Already have roundabout on to route K Takitimu with lanes that cross over one another causing confusion and accidents. Then the two lanes into one lane to go from route K to Barkes corner causing problems ...seems its always temporary layouts that then remain . But like the Omokoroa turn off that should be an over pass motorway exit will be yet another roundabout and taking a whole year for another roundabout . Half a job again
Going round in circles!!!

Signalising the roundabout just past the BO Service Station is going to cause a backup of traffic as they try and come off the other roundabout. This will most likely cause backed-up traffic to spill back into the free-flow roundabout (immediately before the BP Service Station). My prediction is that there will soon be queues of traffic blocking the first free-flow roundabout, meaning people will be stopped in the actual roundabout waiting for the lights just 100 metres away to change. Formerly, it allowed us to flow freely into the second roundabout, stopping only as we merged with others going around it. Not well thought out from what I can see. And yes, it caught me out the first time, with those new orange markers blocking me from entering the right-hand lane to the Crossing. Had to go around again and figure it out. Confusing and dangerous!
Kickbacks
Posted on 06-06-2025 11:51 | By Kaimai
Do road designers get kickbacks from the road cone people? Do road designers use roads where cones are placed? Why are the Lakes Roundabout and the Tga Crossing Roundabouts being redesigned revamped so soon after opening? I'm glad I live in Western Bay and don't pay for all this nonsense - you Tga ratepayers should be livid with this carryon
Balls Up
Posted on 06-06-2025 11:51 | By Fernhill22
What a complete balls up. Why do they need to change anything with this roundabout in the first instance. In its current form it's extremely dangerous & is going to get someone killed. If you are entering the roundabout from the Toll side & want to turn right into The Crossing, you go in the right-hand lane but then have to cross over into the left-hand lane at the last minute whilst also trying to avoid oncoming traffic because of these lane dividers. It's an accident waiting to happen. This roundabout shouldn't have been touched at all. The rules for a roundabout should apply-Left hand lane-turn left or go straight through. Right hand lane is for turning right only. Pretty simple!!
By inserting traffic lights at the entrance of The Crossing= traffic congestion & bedlam. Another example of poor traffic management & planning in Tauranga by TCC.
Rules .... People.

Don't follow so damn close people, it's all about braking distance and driving defensively..... Not Offensively!

Both of you raise the obvious point of 'why?'
Fixing something that's not broken and working well isn't fixing anything at all.
So I too ask, why?
Whose trying to justify their job, because chaos and mayhem doesn't justify anything.
Review
Posted on 06-06-2025 13:58 | By Fernhill22
Before any work has started on replacing this roundabout, I feel that TCC need to actually review whether this project actually adds any significant value or benefit.
Everyone who has commented on here can see that this isn't going to work by changing this from a roundabout into an intersection with traffic lights.
You don't need to have a degree in traffic management to figure this isn't going to end well, just plain old common sense.
I would like to see Marty, Mahe, & fellow Councilors taking a drive down there to experience this madness themselves. Press the pause button now, use common sense
because we don't want to see another poorly planned traffic improvement like we have seen happen along Cameron Road, Greerton town centre, Welcome Bay underpass, Maunganui Road-Blake Park, etc, etc.
Have the conviction to say we got it wrong & have listened.
Cone people

Tauriko Chaos
Posted on 06-06-2025 14:52 | By Sabines
On 26th I left 15 minutes earlier and was 15 minutes late = 45 min to Matua via toll road.
Same day a couple of fun drives around the roundabout from Lakes Blvd as couldn't figure out where to exit. Traffic got worse every day, no matter which way I tried to leave the Lakes.
Y'day 90 minutes to Matua from Lakes. Am a contractor - how much time money will I loose if I can't get where I want in time. How much more ridiculous, expensive, unnecessary ideas will this council come up with??? Paid for --- us the ratepayers. Grrrrr
Why consultants
Posted on 06-06-2025 15:21 | By Leprechaun
Why not select local people as ‘consultants’ who use the area daily to sort out the lanes? Involve the users not pen pushers.
Traffic Lights are a liability
Posted on 06-06-2025 17:16 | By Pedro2
I agree with all that has been said so far.
A set of ludicrous changes completely unnecessary
Leave it as it is.
Roundabouts are significantly more efficient than traffic lights especially outside peak traffic times that only occur about 4-5 hours a day
They keep the traffic moving at any time of the day
We already suffer unnecessary delays from traffic lights on 6th and 9th ave that used to flow freely throughout the day and night.
Let common sense prevail.
It would appear that this is completely lacking in the majority of major projects happening around NZ today
Smashed them over

Sorry about this...but....towing a 3 axle long trailer loaded with steel behind a large ute....I had no choice but to run over many cones/road markers simply to safely navigate this TCC nightmare...there was simply not enough room on several turns to STAY in my lane and not encroach into the space of an opposite lane risking an accident. I witnessed 2 large truck and trailers doing the same. These guys are huge...any permanent setup is going to knocked over day 1.
What's the problem
Posted on 07-06-2025 06:37 | By Hideyhi
Not from the area - I drove through last weekend and thanks to signage and delineators I was able to navigate the roundabout quite easily!
Ballzup
Posted on 07-06-2025 08:26 | By Cap'n Cray
Confirmation that TCC can wreck a shopping precinct and stuff up a roading plan.
I've been shopping Tauriko since it opened and benefited by the effective traffic flow. Now that is going and this actually "planned"?
I think that I'll revert to shopping elsewhere
Signs are clear
Posted on 07-06-2025 10:20 | By Moo
I feel most are getting sorted while we allow the road workers to get on and make things safer as traffic is growing in the area nd with Tauriko West underway we need more lanes and better roads. It has caused chaos no one can say it hasn’t. No one likes change but we need to adapt for the next four months and wait to see how the improvements might improve the ease of the intersections around the crossing shopping centre. It has been recommended that if you work in the Tauriko business estate pass the crossing to use the next roundabout where possible to reduce congestion. Let’s keep our eyes on the road and watch for clear signage. I think like all of us you drive a road so frequently you stop expecting any changes, but driving should always have your full attention.
Sorry Moo

Since when do the TCC do things in 4months. I'll eat my boots if this is finished this time next year. Tauranga citizens seem to have very short memories. How long did Cameron Rd take? Remember the chaos, more guys doing health and safety than working, not to mention businesses closing. You're dreaming mate.
Saturday chaos.
Posted on 07-06-2025 15:05 | By Cynical Me
It was just that. Madness and the traffic was backed up past Farmlands.
Whoever designed this mess should quit.
Apart from that, was it a problem needing a solution ? Not really and it certainly was low priority compared to say Barkes Corner, where the same money would really make a difference to hundreds of people everyday. But we will wait until 2039 for that to be sorted, when carving a bit of Western Bay council's corner and the corner opposite and building some slip lanes would make a difference of 20- 40 minutes every day to those having to go through there every day. If Western Bay didn't want to play ball, they could just take it as they did at Redwood lane.

In a lot of ways I agree with you, however, it's about doing it safely and this is anything but.
OMG
Posted on 08-06-2025 18:22 | By Justin T.
Ok... I admit I made a comment about safe braking distance rule..... but.... I have just driven through that very roundabout and I and the police car that was behind me were confused as to how to safely navigate the orange batons to get into The Crossing. We both ended up stuck on Highway 36 and had to do a uey. Even the second time I used that roundabout I still needed my navigator (wife) to guide me safely through this diabolical, idiotic slalom to get to our destination.
Well done to the instigators of this modification, the local Paint and Panel Shops will be enjoying an increase in business.
