State Highway 2 will remain closed overnight to light vehicles in Pongakawa between Kaikokopu Road and Wilson Road South due to flooding at the Kaikokopu Stream Bridge.

Road users are asked to please follow the posted detour and expect delays.

The detour for light vehicles eastbound: Right on Wilson Road South, left on Old Coach Road, left on Maniatutu Road, right on SH2. Reverse for westbound light vehicles. Heavy vehicles may still use SH2.

There are also areas of flooding on SH2 through the Waioweka Gorge between Ōpōtiki and Waioweka. Road users are advised to drive with caution.

"The wet weather has destabilised four trees along Takitimu Drive, on SH2 in Tauranga, and they pose a risk of falling onto the highway if not removed," an NZTA Waka Kotahi spokesperson said.

"Tomorrow night, Thursday 12 June, there will be a left lane closure with a 30km/h temporary speed limit in place for felling. In addition, there will be four rolling blocks implemented as each tree is felled."

Wet weather has caused surface flooding and brought down trees around the Bay of Plenty overnight and road users are advised to slow down and drive with caution.

SH2 is back open at Matatā but under a temporary speed limit, following a closure this morning to remove a downed tree. NZTA crews are on site attending to potholes. The planned maintenance programme has been delayed due to heavy rain but drainage activities should be completed here by the end of week.

NZTA is monitoring risks at other locations in the Bay of Plenty and further closures will be advised if they are needed.

Plan for a safe, enjoyable journey. Keep up to date with:
