Following the failed attempt to break the world skinny dip world record on Papamoa beach earlier this month – organisers are having another shot this Sunday.
On December 30 more than 1000 people are expected to get naked in the water as the Baywatch campsite in Gisborne hosts the world record attempt.
The skinny dip world record attempt at Papamoa Beach earlier this month.
According to The Guinness Book of World Records, the current world record of 413 participants was achieved by a mid-summer skinny dip in South Wales in the United Kingdom on June 19 last year.
Almost 300 people braved the waters at Harrisons Cut in Papamoa on December 2 in an attempt organised by The Edge radio station. The 299 participants fell short of the 414 person goal.
BW Festival organiser Toby Burrows says he is excited to announce the ZM and Skinny Mobile World Record Skinny Dip and is calling for Rhythm and Vines festival goers to get their gear off in an effort to break the world record for the greatest number of people to skinny dip at a single venue.
'BW campers have never been afraid to challenge the norm. They're an enthusiastic group of young New Zealanders who are ready to give anything a go.”
BW festival project manager Christine Shanahan says a little less than 1400 people attending the Rhythm and Vines Festival in Gisborne will stay at the BW Campgrounds – and most are expected to take part in the skinny dip.
'On the beach there could be up to 1400 because they're coming to watch the Bikini Jam Amazon bikini competition before that.”
Christine says she is looking forward to organising the event with New Zealand breast cancer and former music channel C4 presenter Helena McAlpine, who will be getting her gear off for the afternoon.
'Just to be there with her doing it that means a lot to me too.”
Participants will be issued with an electronic wrist band, available from BW Camp grounds, which will be swiped in order to keep count of the world record number.
'I'm not sure how many people we're going to get but I'm confident well be able to do it. I think people will embrace it.
'Some people have expressed interest via social media but not sure of exact amount at the moment.”
Registrations open on December 27. The event is expected to take place at Midway Beach in Gisborne at 2pm.
