Dogs could dine in

Man's best friend may soon be joining the reservation lists of Bay of Plenty bars and resturants.

Under the Food Bill, proposed by Minister of Food and Safety Kate Wilkinson now before Parliament, proprietors would have the right to decide whether pets are welcome in their bar or restaurant.

Restaurants and bars may soon have the right to choose whether pets are welcome in their premises.

The current Food Hygiene Regulations 1974 says 'no animal is permitted" on premises where food is prepared or sold but the new bill will require operators to take responsibility for food safety in an appropriate way for their businesses.

Under the proposal, all food operators who manufacture, sell or trade in food must be able to demonstrate safe food-handling practices.

Some Tauranga hospitality operators have already taken a relaxed approach to the rules, welcoming dogs on to their premises as long as they do not cause trouble.

Both The Crown and Badger Pub in Tauranga and Mount Maunganui restaurant and bar Imbibe allow dogs in the outside area of their premises.

Crown and Badger manager Paul Robinson says the establishment generally tries to keep dogs on the Wharf Street side and ensure they are not inside.

'We get a regular who brings his dog down and people throw a tennis ball around for it. There is nothing wrong with it.”

Imbibe duty manager Sandra Kuelbel says dogs are only allowed in their outside dining area. She doesn't see a problem with the proposal.

'As long as they are outside and well behaved and no other customers have a problem.”

Mount Mellick and Ivory owner Clayton Mitchell says this is the first he has heard of the proposal and believes it is 'PC stupidity gone mad”.

'Where's it going to end? Next there will be pet hamsters and all sorts.

'I don't think there's a place for pets in bars and restaurants. I'm not against pets being at the front of the premises and I'm more than happy to put out a bowl of water for them, but not inside.”

The bill is currently awaiting a second reading and if passed will replace the Food Act 1981.

this is beyond a joke. I believe only guide dogs should be allowed in eating places. stop smoking yes but now bringing pets in to eating places. what about the people that enjoy going out but have allergies to dogs.......

I guess I have a biased opinion as I am a dog owner however recently we travelled in the UK for 4 months and we wished we had our dog with us as they are allowed virtually everywhere. We went to a local pub for drinks several nights and the dog was allowed in to sit next to us. There are dogs allowed in camping grounds, on public transport, in pubs, etc AND they were all well behaved. The other thing we didn't see was doggy doos all over the place either. I would welcome some establishments being dog friendly and would certainly make the effort to patronise these places.

No.

Besides bad food and high prices this is just another reason to not eat out. What a stupid idea!

are out, so if someone is blind drunk, are they allowed to be shown the way home, to many grey areas to make it a law, leave things as they are, and it is up to the managers discretion to allow a canine into a OUTDOOR area only, and possibly only during daylight hours.

Guide dogs only please

No other dogs potentially disrupting others dining experience. Mind you, some people behave worse???

I not only have allergies to animals, I go out to socialise with PEOPLE, not dogs.....If the truth be known, these animals would rather home relaxing in their own environment.....People bring their dogs to the jazz festival (and other events) to get STOOD on and I feel very sorry for them in the big crowds....I was at the Little Big Markets a few weeks ago and saw a dog do a doo, right outside the one of the stall holders stall and the owner did nothing about it. So what happens when nature calls in a restaurant....

Put simply, dogs (animals of any sort) apart from guide dogs in = me and my family out. So, dogs or $
