Teens accused of bashing taxi driver

Two Tauranga teenagers are facing aggravated robbery charges in connection with an assault on a taxi driver.

Timote Manu, 19, and 18-year-old Jared Dixon are accused of beating and robbing a Tauranga taxi driver as he dropped them at an Ohauiti address on Wednesday night.

Police are looking for this teenager in relation to an assault on a taxi driver in Ohauiti.

The pair appeared in Tauranga District Court yesterday where they were remanded in custody to reappear on Tuesday.

Police were called to an Ohauiti address on Wednesday where a 40-year-old driver suffered head injuries.

He was taken to Tauranga Hospital where he spent the night before being released yesterday.

Police say the taxi driver picked up four men from Welcome Bay shops and drove them to Ohauiti Road where the alleged assault took place.

Detective Sergeant Iain Chapman says the driver managed to get out of the taxi but the alleged attack continued until a resident on the street yelled at accused before the accused attempted to run away.

About half a dozen residents came to the victim's aid and managed to restrain one man.

Another man was arrested a short time later by a dog handler.

Iain praises the response of residents who came to the victim's aid.

"We never want the public to put themselves in danger, we couldn't do the job that we do without the invaluable help of people willing to stand up for what is right."

Police still want to talk to the other two men who were in the taxi at the time of the alleged attack.

One is pictured in CCTV footage taken from a camera in the taxi and the other was off camera.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Detective Sergeant Chapman at Tauranga Police on 07 5774300.

Alternatively, information can be left anonymously via the Crimestoppers 0800 555 111 line.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - to find out who the other 2 scumbags are you simply need to quadruple the sentence for the 2 idiots they have in custody unless they give up the names. All it needs is for our politicians to pass a law and issue guidance to judges. Job done and no money wasted trying to find out who they are.
