World cup jumping at the winery

A winery isn't the usual venue for show jumping but that's just what will happen in Bethlehem today when Mills Reef Winery hosts the Bayleys New Zealand World Cup final.

The evening event marks the start of a three day competition and offering the public a chance to enjoy a picnic in the winery grounds while watching the country's top show jumpers in action, says organiser Sally Steiner.

Showjumpers will compete for top honours in the Bayleys Tauranga World Cup final this weekend.

The highlight of the evening will be the Mills Reef Classic when around 40 horses and riders are expected to take part in the programme beginning at 4pm.

'This is the third time we have held the event at the winery and the public are very welcome to come along. There's no admission charge and Mills Reef will be operating a public bar so people can bring a picnic, but no alcohol,” says Sally, who with husband Phillip, and Marie and Dave King have coordinated the event. All are members of Tauranga Showjumping.

The programme moves to the Tauranga Racecourse on Friday morning where competitions will continue until Sunday.

'We are expecting around 400 competitors from throughout the North Island from pony club riders to our oldest competitors who are in their 70s.”

Some of the country's most experienced and successful riders will be taking part, as will up and coming younger riders and Sally says events such as this are the training ground for future national, international and even Olympic champions.

Most competitors will stay on site at the racecourse with their horses and Sally says the event, which brings many people into the city, represents an important economic benefit to the region.

A line up of international qualified judges will be awarding ribbons and trophies to those who complete the best rounds in each event.

'The competitors are a great opportunity for the public to see beautiful horses and well turned out riders show jumping in two lovely locations,” says Sally.

The Mills Reef event begins at 4pm today and the race course venues are open from 8.30pm to 5pm on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. There is no admission charge at either venue.
