The teen received acid burns when five to six litres of 98 per cent concentrate of sulphuric acid was spilt at Opoitki Tyres on Bridge Street yesterday afternoon.

About five litres of sulphuric acid was spilt at Opotiki Tyres on Bridge Street.

Bay of Plenty District Health Board communications advisor Frances Maia says the man was taken to Opotiki Hospital with minor burns following the spill.

'He was treated and discharged yesterday.”

The Opotiki Volunteer Fire Brigade, along with the Greerton Hazmat Unit, was called to the business around 2.20pm on Tuesday.

A brigade spokesperson says the area was cordoned off and the spill was covered with dirt before Environment BOP took over the clean-up operation.

The Opotiki Brigade spent around four hours, until around 6pm, at the scene helping with the clean-up operation before having to return at 8.20pm to assist washing down the site with lime and water.
