Coke warning after mother’s death

Tauranga cola lovers are being warned of the potential dangers of caffeine following an inquest into the death of a woman who consumed around 10 litres of coke a day.

Coroner David Crerar has found that mother of eight Natasha Harris died of a cardiac arrhythmia (heart problems) on February 25, 2010 due to the amount of coke consumed.

An inquest into her death found the 31-year-old drank up to 10 litres of Coke a day - more than the recommended safe daily intake.

Coroner David Crerar says the cardiac arrhythmia was caused by poor nutrition and the effects of caffeine.

In a coroner's report released yesterday, David warned the public about consuming excessive amounts of caffeine.

He says this factor combined with other health and lifestyle choices is the probable cause of Natasha's death.

In his report, David says Natasha smoked around 30 cigarettes a day and often skipped meals.

'In the six months before her death, she had no energy and was feeling sick all the time,” her partner Christopher Hodgkinson is reported as saying during the inquest.

'She would get up every day and vomit.”

The Coroner is recommending the Ministry of Health consider clearer labels on soft drinks to warn people about the dangers of excessive sugar and caffeine.

Public consultations on the recommendations are expected to take place in April.

Coke is not great for you BUT!!!! trying to blame it for this Womens death is way beyond me, age 30.... 8 children.... 30 ciggy a day habit.....10 litres of Coke per day, say roughly she was spending $350.00 per week to fund her addictions, NOW I have to ask, who the hell was paying for the feeding of her children and all the household expenses??, what was the husband doing besides making babies??, I would have thought having your teeth pulled out in your 20s would be a wake up call, and hell where is the Valium when you need it, this has to be the biggest joke so far this year, and warnings for everything abound, is there one for sheer stupidity?

dont blame the fizz

this doant seem to be a problem with coke..more the excessive consumption and diet of the woman..10 litres of anything per day is not good for anyone...she obviously had other problems that needed addressing.

I was hit by a bus once

If only it had a warning sign on it I wouldn't have stepped in front of it!! As for this story, warning labels didn't stop her smoking 30 cigarettes a day, so why would a coroner recommend warnings on drink bottles?
