Hot pools closed again

The Mount Maunganui Hot Pools have been closed again for the day due to ongoing issues.

The hot pools reopened yesterday after Tauranga City Council advised the public of Friday's day-long closure due to an electrical fault.

The Mount Maunganui Hot Pools are closed again today.

Communications advisor Frank Begley says there were some issues at the pool again last night and the pools will be closed today for further repairs.

'Contractors are back on site and are working to find out what the problem is. We assume they lost the heat, but they are looking into whether it is a continuing problem or something else.”

The pools previously shut down over anniversary weekend when an electrical fault shut down the bore pump.

At the time of that closure, Tauranga City Aquatics Limited CEO Tania Delahunty said the Anniversary weekend fault was an unexpected electrical fault.

The hot pools work by pumping hot salt water from an underground bore to heat exchangers which heat the seawater used in the pools. The pump is below ground at the bottom of the bore.

Whether it is because the pools lost heat or something else, it is a continuing problem. Either way, another Council continuing fiasco in my opinion. Proof that along with years of hotel sagas, marine areas etc etc, Council has difficulty in achieving what private enterprise would find quite simple.

The long term ?

Putting band-aids on are not going to solve the bigger problems. I suggest council take a long term view as to the pools sustainability. Time to abandon altogether(ie sell/tender to business) or start afresh? Tough call time councillors!

Should have redeveloped

Just think, if only those few but loud moaners hadn't moaned so much, the hot pools would have been redeveloped and we would have seen all of the plant and equipment in tip top condition and not failing. Why do we have so many people blaming TCC and TCAL. Look to those in the public who never stopped complaining and lodging appeals against the resource consent, they were the ones that stopped the project that could have seen the mount with an amazing world class facility. Then band aids wouldn't be necessary.

Too cold for my liking...

I've stopped visiting the Mt Hotpools long ago. It's just too cold. I tried them out again after the last major repairs but there was no improvement. Visitors the the area have also commented to me that the Mt Hotpools are not as hot as expected. Anyway, I hope they eventually get it sorted. Maybe the bore is not deep enough to get good heat?

So the days of our life follow just like the time flowing through the hour glass of time and the sand trackles in the downward, there is only one way for it to flow ... at the Mount Hot Pools it is.

How unusual!

But let's not lose sight of the fact that it's "private enterprise" that's contracted to find and fix these faults NOT the people who staff the pool complex.

That is the correct heading, just because the sign at the front door says "hot" does nto mean that is actually the case.

I do not agree, TCAL can not make up its mind about being a commercial or a public benefit activity. Either way the staff are arranging the work to be done and paying for it even though substandard work, not compelted correctly and then those same contractors are coming back to do it all again at even more cost. About time someone competent got in there and fix the place up a bit.

Why fix a problem properly, and do yourself out of a wage,it is so much better with a Council that has a overflowing "honey jar", to stuff it up, therefore having to keep going back to fix it, hell you have to earn a wage, but the problem is how do you get a job with the Council, or be able to stick your hand in the jar?, and who has the "cajones"to start making the big calls, I know lets employ a City Manager on 350k to fix it.

Need to get someone in there who has a clue about what to do and how to fix it. It is clear that mainzeal a building company did not have a clue about how t fix it as they never found the leak.

Surely if the plant is all old you would look at replacing it all in a proper and orderly fashion like when the place was closed for 4-5 months in 2011, but of course that decision was a from the hip reactionary thing with little planning or thought put into it, the challenges then have failed to be remedied even now two years on. Seems that the contractor was allowed in there to slash and burn bits of the place at an excess cost yet the problem continue. There can be no excuses here, it is a mess then, it is a mess now and everywhere in between. Going forward there will be no respite from the financial torture and ravaging of ratepayers until there are changes in personnel as that is the core issue that remains unchanged through out all the challenges faced and they have failed to remedy.

looks a bit like the grand canyon every day in this place, shame really as the Mount Pools could be relied upon prior to the last two days.

Then there is not a lot to see, tends ot obscure the view of the world and some. But the results at the Mount Hot Pools speak for themselves about the repeat effrts to remedy a problem that was never there at the start. The old saying of "If it ain't broke don't fix it" really does apply.
