‘Spectacular’ crash at speedway

A ‘spectacular' crash in the first heat of Saturday night's Baypark race meeting kicked off a stellar night of racing.

Two local championships and an invitation series were the draw cards at Baypark Speedway's meet.

A spectacular crash in the first heat of the Bay Sprint Car champs by Wellington visitor 24W Stephen Taylor bought out the yellows, however the hard working 24W crew soon had the vehicle back out on the track for the feature.

The United States Jonathan Allard led the Sprint Car feature for most of the 25 laps until a tyre blew on lap 23.

2nz Dean Brindle took over the lead of the race to the chequered flag to become the 2012 / 2013 Bay Sprint Car Champion.

The first six positions on the Grid for the Bay Saloon champs was set via a pole shuffle where two cars race side by side over two laps with the fastest remaining on the track to be challenged by the next competitor in the top six.

2nz Steve Cowling and 14M Brent Kaye were the highest placed in the shuffle and started off the front row of the Saloon field in the 20 lap feature. Steve led into turn 1, a position he held throughout the race to become the 2012/ 2013 Bay Saloon Car Champion.

The second round of the Flamecrusher Top Half Midget series was decided over a 30 lap feature with 7A Brad Mosen starting in last position and moving to first position within the 30 lap race distance. Three quarters of the original starting field was out with mechanical failure during the race but Aucklander Wayne Green 10A finished in second position with Mr Lucas Oil Ricky Logan 81A in third.
