A teenage boy is in Tauranga Hospital's Intensive Care Unit after falling two metres from the roof of a building at Arataki Primary School overnight.
The 14-year-old boy was climbing along roofs at the school on Kaimanawa Street about 7pm on Monday when he fell hitting his head on the ground.
A 14-year-old boy fell from a roof at Arataki Primary School overnight.
He was taken to Tauranga Hospital by Mount Maunganui St John paramedics.
Bay of Plenty District Health Board communications manager Diana Marriott says the boy was transferred to ICU overnight.
'He is in a serious but stable condition.”
A St John paramedics' spokesperson says the boy suffered a bang to his head as a result of the fall.
'Parents at the scene say there have been similar situations with kids jumping from roof to roof at the school.
'The boy was treated at the scene before being taken to Tauranga Hospital.”
Police were also called to the scene.
Principal Dene Langley says he has emailed SunLive's article about the incident to the teachers.
'I've emailed it to the teachers to let the children read it and let it be a warning about the dangers of climbing on the roof.
'We've had children on the roof, and all schools have that, and there has been some damage done to the guttering and stuff.”
He says there haven't been any incidents in the past where people have seriously hurt themselves.

If the school didn't have a roof this preventable accident couldn't have happened.

So lets use the roof, it is much easier ... Oh course there is a litle more to it than just aking a short cut. I am sure that the Police will get to the bottom of it.
No sympathy

Pity some haven't realised they are but mere mortals.
After hours?

No reason to be there, something fishy about that, maybe up to no good lurking around on the roof.
Karma prevails

I hope he gets convicted to add insult to injury and his parents get named for raising a delinquent. ALL costs incurred by us taxpayers should be charged to him and his family for being so useless in teaching him the simple arts of balance and maturity etc etc
That's right phailed

all roofs must be removed immediately, so that children can't hurt themselves. lol.
For the school now..

Of course OSH will investigate, the school will now have to review its health and safety policy e.g. Was there sufficient lighting? Were ladders provided for a safe way down? What weight can the roof take? How many pink elephants can stand on the roof?. Is the roof now watertight and safe to stand on again? Why did it take x minutes for services to arrive? Was grandma advised at the time? From one who knows . . . me!
they being kids.

It all about LEARNING, boys love to climb "Trees, Roofs, Jumping" Let them grow!!!!!!!!!! Yes they're going to hurt them self's, but they see it as FUN!! OSH need to get out of thier Office's!! and let kids have fun. You going to put kids in boxz with high side so they don't get out! for the rest of thier life's,, sitting on a companter and getting fatter, not seeing the outside life. Yes it does cost Money when they do these things, but its the only way they are going to learn!! Once they have done it they won't do it again!!

What alot of crock!! I come from a family that has heaps of boys and they never did stupid things as climbing roofs of schools..we had the bush at the back for all that..hahaha! Kids are always going to do dumb shyte thats part of them being boys.. maybe if you make them do the repairs or work them off. This will send out a message to all youngsters that choices come with consequences!
