Get in the ring

Hemi is involved in the TKO Boxing Academy National Contender Event at Baypark Stadium on Saturday August 8. He encourages people will come along, see some of New Zealand's top amateur boxers, and learn more about the sport.

Tauranga boxing trainer Hemi Niha says while some may think boxing is a violent sport, it is actually great for helping people get fit and teaching them the mind strength to get through
the tough times.

Top Kiwi boxer Shane Cameron makes a guest appearance in Tauranga this Saturday, August 8 as Baypark Stadium hosts the TKO Boxing Academy National Contender Event.

Shane will talk to the crowd and sign autographs before flying to Auckland for TV3's Telethon.
Some of New Zealand's best amateur boxers will be in the ring. The competition gives boxers aiming at a national title more fight experience before the national championships in October. Forty boxers from around the country will be fighting, including seven from TKO Boxing Academy in Tauranga.
Central North Island Champion and Golden Gloves North Island Women's Champion Renee Moore, Central North Island Golden Gloves Champion Joe Otterson, Denny Kota, Razon Manu, heavyweight Darren Payne, and 15-year-old Harrison Hutta are all taking part.
Golden Gloves heavy weight champion James Jock Emerson will also be there but whether he fights is uncertain as he has just returned from a gold medal performance at the Oceania Games in Tahiti.
Matua Parkinson is MC for the night.
Tauranga boxing trainer Hemi Niha is hoping the Western Bay community will get behind the event.
'We will have young kids from our Boxfit Academy to start the day showing what they have learned. We want to motivate children to become more active.
'Boxing is also good for all ages, teaching mind strength so you can grit your teeth when you have to when times are tough.”
The event runs from 3-10pm. Tickets are available at the door or corporate tables are available.
