Full steam ahead

After a shaky start to pre-season matches and issues over their original coach, the team is leading the Air New Zealand Cup competition with three wins from three. The Steamers go into Saturday's game against Waikato at Baypark Stadium as favourites to win. Go the Steamers!

The Bay of Plenty Steamers seem to be getting up a good head of steam this season.

Recently-appointed Bay of Plenty Steamers' coach, Sean Horan says he is really proud of how his team has
performed so far this season. 'What has amazed me is after all the adversity we have had over the last three or four weeks, how the players have managed to show such responsibility and maturity throughout. They have just gone out there and done the job on the field.”
Sean says that last week's victory against Wellington, only the third time in 100 years, was particularly good for everyone.
'I was born and bred in Wellington and last week was assistant coach Steve Miln's and my first game actually as the official coaches, so it was very good for us.”
The team came through the game unscathed as well and Sean says they have nothing more than a few bumps and bruises to deal with. He feels they are in good shape for their next game against Waikato at Baypark Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
'Just a bit of player maintenance, really. Plus we will have to do without Tanerau Latimer who is on All Black duty.”
Liam Messam is a player Sean Horan has identified as someone the Steamers will have to look out for when they meet Waikato.
'And they have a lot more players with more Super 14 experience than us. But they will be strong all over the field.”
The team has just appointed former Poverty Bay coach Paul Feeney as team manager and now seems to have their administrative woes behind them.
Kick-off for the Steamers' match is 2.35pm.
