Bananas top trolley items

Bananas are the bestselling item on New Zealand shoppers' grocery lists, according to figures released by Countdown supermarkets.

To mark the supermarkets' 10th birthday of its popular customer loyalty programme Onecard, Countdown released data announcing the country's top supermarket trolley items.

Bananas are the top selling item in New Zealand.

In terms of sales, the top item in shoppers' supermarket trolleys is bananas.

A countdown spokesperson says without fault bananas are at the top of Kiwi shopping lists and have been for there for the last 10 years.

'They have always been the top item week to week. I guess it's because they are pretty much always in season.”

The figures also confirm that when it comes to shopping lists, Kiwi shoppers prefer familiarity to adventure.

According to the figures, Kiwis prefer white toast to brown, milk chocolate to more exotic varieties and the chosen favourite ice-cream is not the country's iconic hokey pokey, but old fashioned vanilla.

The figures also show New Zealanders prefer spaghetti instead of baked beans, butter instead of margarine, and crunchy peanut butter instead of smooth.

Marmite and Vegemite were also recorded but left out of the findings because data was skewed following the 2010 Christchurch earthquake leaving the Sanitarium factory unable to produce the yeast-based spread.

Countdown managing director Dave Chambers says New Zealanders may be traditional in their tastes, but they're smart when it comes to value.

"Onecard has 1.8 million active users across the country and since it was launched in 2003, our loyal customers have saved more than $500 million on their shopping and enjoyed more than $145 million in rewards.

"Onecard savings and rewards vouchers put real dollars in our customers' pockets.”

Although the data released today is light hearted, Dave says the figures highlight the serious value Onecard provides to Countdown customers.

"Onecard has evolved from a simple savings card to one of the country's biggest loyalty programmes. Because of that, we can tailor rewards based on insights and really reflect what our customers want from their supermarket. "

Countdown supermarkets are celebrating Onecard's 10th birthday in stores throughout May.

Card holders receive one Onecard reward point for every whole $10 spent in each transaction in store with 200 points equating to a $15 rewards voucher.

Earlier this year, Countdown also launched the Onecard Visa credit card - an all-in-one loyalty card and credit card.
