Parents to lead by example

Police are warning motorists to watch out for unpredictable children after a number of infringement notices have been issued during their ‘Back to School' campaign in Tauranga.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion.

Western Bay of Plenty road policing manager Senior Sergeant Ian Campion says the campaign ran from Monday and finished Friday afternoon.

'Because it is the start of the first week of Term 2 it's really important to make sure drivers are complying with the reduced speed limits around school zones.

'Children are particularly unpredictable, and police have been focusing on that all week.”
He says numerous infringements have been issued, but by in large, the vast majority are taking the necessary care around schools.

'Parents and caregivers who are dropping children off, and picking them up, also need to set the example and park legally and safely.

'Not everyone will get a park right at the school gate, so parents need to park safely, and if necessary, walk their child a short distance to the school.”

Ian warns people not to park in a position where there is a heightened risk or if it places their child or children in a potentially hazardous situation.

also a great idea and recommended is get your children out of the passenger side of the car........ even if they are sitting on the drivers side in the back get them to slide over. much safer.

A pity

It is a pity that the block around Windsor and Queen Road doesn't have a reduced speed zone. There is a preschool, primary school, intermediate school and college all within a block. More than 2000 children attend these schools every day. A reduced speed limit there is called for.
