A Papamoa mother is relieved her son is home after panic struck when he failed to return from school yesterday afternoon.
Alarm bells were raised when Samantha Campbell's seven-year-old son did not arrive home from Tahatai Coast School when expected.
A series of texts and Facebook posts were sent to parents and children around Tauranga in an attempt to try and locate the Year 3 student.
Police were also contacted.
Caleb, who regularly walks home from school, was expected to arrive around 3.30pm but did not show up.
'He normally doesn't take off. We were very panicked.”
Caleb had instead gone to a friend's house, whose parents later dropped him home, not knowing his family and police had been looking for him.
'It was just a little bit scary.”
The first thing Samantha said to her son was 'where have you been?”
'I was happy to see him but mad he didn't come home.”

Some parents are just down right dumb...this boy went missing because he is 7yrs old!! Why would anyone allow their child to walk home from school at that age!

Got a text yesterday. None of my kids attend Tahatai Coast School but its good to see social media has its benefits. Glad he is safe...maybe pick up from school. 7 is a little young to be walking home by himself. Especially as the man that tried to pick up a girl from Mt Intermediate hasn't been found

I agree, isn't 7 too young to be walking home from school? Did the parents of the friend ask the boy if his parents knew where he was??
7 too young?

I was 8 when I walked home and picked up my little sister from kindy on the way. Kind of depends how far away home is and the neighbourhood too. All the neighbours new both of us and we were 4 blocks in a straight line with no major raods to cross.
