Mainland cheese slices recalled

Mainland Tasty individually wrapped flavoured processed cheese slices are being recalled by Fonterra.

The 250g packets with a best before date of February 28, 2014 have been recalled because of a packaging fault, says Baden Ngan Kee, FBNZ Sales Director.

The decision follows two reported incidents of thin strips of the plastic wrapping sticking to the cheese when it is unwrapped.

'After an investigation, we have found a fault with the product's packaging. The plastic wrapping of individual slices may split into thin strips causing a potential hazard if consumed. There have been no reports of anyone being harmed.

'The voluntary recall is a precautionary measure as the health and safety of our consumers, and the quality of our product cannot be compromised. We advise anyone with family or friends who may have bought this product to contact them in case they do not see or hear this announcement.”

Consumers should not eat the product but should return it to the point of purchase (with the appropriate packaging with the best before date) for a full refund.

This recall is limited to the product produced in New Zealand and sold in the North Island.

Some of the affected product has also been sold to consumers in Fiji, and FBNZ is currently working with the relevant authorities in Fiji to ensure the affected product is removed from market.

No other products manufactured by or on behalf of FBNZ are affected.

For further information, consumers should call the FBNZ Customer and Consumer Services line: 0800 256 257.
