Firefighters attended a scrub fire burning through a grass bank in Welcome Bay today.
Tauranga fire brigade was called to the fire on Welcome Bay Road just past Ranginui Road around 8.15am after reports of smoke in the area.
Fire is burning through a five-six metre high grass bank.
A reporter at the scene says flames burned through a five to six metre high grass bank.
Thick smoke was seen billowing over nearby residences and can be seen as far as the Welcome Bay roundabout and Tauranga city.
It is believed the fire is a controlled burn on private property.

This is more than a scrub fire. The land had been cleared of pine trees and what is burning is smaller logs, limbs etc. It will be a big fire.
