City carjacker pleads guilty

An Auckland man has admitted to assaulting a man and stealing his car from the Kingsview carpark before fleeing from police and crashing into a pole at 14th Avenue.

Conrad Oscar Rewita, 30, appeared in Tauranga District Court this morning where he pleaded guilty to aggravated robbery, driving with excess breath alcohol causing injury, reckless driving causing injury and breach of court release conditions.

Oscar Rewita has pleaded guilty to carjacking a Toyota from the Kingsview carpark in Tauranga.

He is jointly charged with Tepee Snow Laison, 33, who is currently in custody awaiting sentencing on August 5.

Liason previously pleaded guilty to robbery and unrelated charges of shoplifting, driving while disqualified and breaching supervision earlier this year.

At around 2.30am on May 10 the pair were in the Kingsview capark in Tauranga City where they came across three people returning to their vehicle.

Rewita then attacked one of the male members of the group and stole his 1999 Toyota Corolla.

According to police summary of facts, Rewita led police on a chase down Cameron Road to 14th Avenue where he lost control of the vehicle, crashing into a pole.

Rewita blew 908 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath when he was breathtested by police. The adult limit is 400 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath.

Laison, who was a passenger in the car, was injured in the crash and spent around three days in Tauranga Hospital recovering from injuries.

Rewita appeared before Judge Thomas Ingram this morning for a sentencing indication hearing.

Judge Ingram advised the sentencing start point would be six years jail.

'There is no tariff set for this kind of offending,” Judge Ingram said as the defence and Crown were deciding on an appropriate start point for Rewita's sentence.

He said carjacking carries a maximum sentence of 14 years prison, so a start point of three to four years put forward by the Crown and defence 'would not cut it”.

'An appropriate starting point is six years with a 25 per cent discount for an early plea,” Judge Ingram said.

After a short discussion with Rewita's lawyer Olivia Brittain, a guilty plea was entered on all four charges.

He was remanded in custody until August 5 for sentencing.

Why do these people who do heinous acts against people and the Law as a majority seem to come from a certain ethnic group. Where are their politically orientated Leaders? You dont hear them speaking out, decrying these shameful acts. We all know they are over-represented in Prisons but they seem to have their heads buried in the sand. Come on decent Maori folk speak out. I am sorry if this reads to you as a 'racist' remark but its true. Where's the mana these days.

Good job

A message needs to be sent that home invasion and carjacking (similar crimes in principle) will not be accepted. The guy was drunk and possibly not entirely responsible for his actions, but that doesn't excuse the outcome or the effects on the people he attacked. It is saddening to see people come to this pass, but ultimately all of us are responsible for our lives.
