Willow St likely to stick

Tauranga's main bus stops will remain in Willow Street after Tauranga City Councillors re-debated the transportation centre site issue and supported Mayor Stuart Crosby's motion to retain the Willow Street site.
In addition, the staff are directed to retain car parking for retailers near the Masonic car park, and to look at ways of routing as many services as possible along Durham Street instead of via Grey Street to reduce congestion.

The council will also discuss with the bus operators how long the buses will be left idling while waiting in Wharf Street to begin routes and investigate all options of reducing the capital costs.
The staff report is expected to come back to the council for ratifying in late February.
In spite of the additional time spent on the issue, there was little added to the debate.
Those in favour are aware it is not a perfect solution, but Stuart says the council has to act to improve the levels of service for bus passengers, who outnumber the opposition.
About 7500 people a week use Tauranga's public transport.
His seconder, David Stewart, says doing nothing is not an option. The only option was Durham Street and that did not attract the government subsidy of $450,000 that Willow Street has received.
If Tauranga does not spend the money there is a risk it will go elsewhere, says David.
'If we don't do it now there will be lots of other local authorities able to make a decision.”
Councillors opposing Willow Street did so on grounds that include street safety, traffic management and protecting the city centre.
Bill Grainger who abstained last time, voted against Willow Street and said Harington Street was a better place for the bus stops.
Hayden Evans says the bus stops should go on the edge of the city. Wayne Moultrie says the bus station in the centre of Hong Kong works fine. Catherine Stewart says the decision is for 20 years, and the council needs to think more about doing it once and doing it right.

TCC have made yet another dumb decision, and, as usual, have considered that decision and decided to stick with it. Willow, Durham and Harrington streets are all unsuitable for a transport centre. First Ave, though, certainly has potential.
