Te Puke community leaders and residents are banding together to fight a store's stubborn stance on continuing to sell synthetic cannabis.
Te Puke store Puff 2 Go is facing a protest planned for next week after the R18 store selling the legal highs opened in Jellicoe Street two weeks ago.

Last month the Psychoactive Substances Bill was passed into law placing tougher restrictions on the sale of so-called ‘legal' highs in communities. It includes a ban on sales from dairies, grocery stores, petrol stations or anywhere alcohol is sold.
As part of the law no legal highs are allowed to be sold to anyone under 18-years-old. Stores caught selling to under-18s face up to two-years in prison or a fine of up to $500,000.
Since then a public protest rallying against the store is being organised for next Wednesday at 4pm.
The public are encouraged to write protest letters and make placards before meeting in the old New World supermarket car park, on Oxford Street at 4pm.
Concerned resident Mark Boyle has met with the shop owners twice in the last two weeks and says although realising the agitation and ill feeling, the store owners are not changing their minds.
'People are expressing their concern and asking him to stop selling it and I think that's how the community should handle it,” says Mark.
'Continued lobbying has value. Provided this lobbying is done in a sensible way it will reinforce the point that our community does not want the sale of this product to continue.”
Puff 2 Go owners Lindsay Zuo and Jin Woo Hwang closed the shop for two days while police ensured business is conducted legally before being given the green light.
'We are being monitored by the government and wouldn't do anything wrong,” says Lindsay.
'This product is not all bad. I know it's helping people for pain relief and most customers use it to relax.”
The store offers 10 different legal high products, which Lindsay says is a small part of their business. Lindsay is adamant the dangerous part is not the product itself, but how people use the product.
'At least give this regulation a try before waving the flag saying you are against it.”
Te Puke High School chaplain Dane Attwood says legal highs are like nicotine and he wants to eradicate all of the synthetic products from the town.
'We pick up kids as young as 13 with nicotine in their back pockets and obviously nicotine is not sold to under 18's either,” says Dane.
Lindsay and Jin Woo also own the main street Mayfair Dairy, operating for the last four years.
Dane believes the couple only opened Puff 2 Go to sell legal highs – an accusation the store owners deny.
'As a community we would like to see the shop closed, one for that reason and just because that substance itself is not good in the community.”

if the owners cared at all about the Community, they wouldnt be selling the stuff, Alot of people of many ages agree that they only opened the store to sell Legals highs and utensils... Come on, a name like 'Puff to Go' it says it all. CLOSE THE SHOP!

come on, we don't need another shop like this in Te Puke! It's bad enough having so many liqour stores, pokies etc here. Good on people for standing up and saying something, obviously I will not be shopping at Mayfair dairy either!! Our kids don't need any more temptations, let them learn to get highs by doing good, or good ol' clean fun and playing and socialising. Close it down!!
Don't visit Mayfair

Take your "legal" highs and move on, they are not wanted in Te Puke! I also encourage all residents to take a stand and boycott the Mayfair dairy which is owned by the same people!

Ask the owners if they would give it to their own kids. I bet not. Or tell them to go see the after math of someone taking this filth. And as for medical reasons how would they know it helps. My guess is someone just told them it helps just to get the filthy stuff. Good luck Te Puke community
Ban them

Let us all state quite clearly that we do NOT want their shop or them if they want to persist against the public opinion. Some people just don't care as long as they get their ill gotten gains. We should all boycott both of their shops!!!!!!

All the local tinny house's will be front line at the protest, I don't know why the kids don't just smoke weed, it's a lot safer and there isn't any shortage of it in TP. Youth of today........

if you would read the big headline thoroughly you would see that this is an R18 store. who cares about kids? you're not 18, you're not allowed to enter the store. what have kids to do with this? you guys with your comments remind me of some hill-billies swinging their pitchforks and going for witch-hunt at midnights... 250 years ago! is your answer "BAN IT!!!" for everything you don't understand? that must be lots of things then...

You said "this is an R18 store. who cares about kids you're not 18, you're not allowed to enter the store. what have kids to do with this?" You obviously live in a world with no under age smoking and drinking. The avenue that procures smokes and drink for under 18's will do the same for this stuff made all the easier when it is on the local street corner
Hypocrites!

Let our kids get high on nicotene and alcohol instead. Those are legal and much better for them. They only cause cancer and other horrendous deseases.

Some of us would be happy if the liquor stores were closed too, Just because it is legal, doesnt make it right. as for your comments about Cancer, it is caused by a number of things in our environment today, 3 children a week are diagnosed with cancer in NZ, some whos parents never smoked in their entire lives.

Add the cigs stores as well.
Take this stuff back home

Zuo and Hwang KNOW how deadly this stuff is. They are only interested in making money. $250 000 worth of this stuff is being processed by customs. Imagine the profit for the owners! Our young people need to be protected. Go Home and peddle this filth in your own country.
