Mount Maunganui women's rugby team is looking to continue a remarkable maiden year heading into today's Baywide final against Waikite.
In their first season in the competition the Mount continues to set the pace, comprehensively dispatching Opotiki 60-10 in last week's semifinal, setting up a final showdown with Waikite who held off a stern East Coast side 17-14.
Played at Mount Maunganui College at 1pm the final is a great showcase for the resurgence of women's rugby in the Bay, says Bay of Plenty Rugby Union operations manager Neil Alton.
'It has been another step forward in the revitalisation of women's rugby this year. We have had eight teams in the competition over the last few weeks.”
'The Mount are going really well. They have a few players in the women's sevens group so they have done well to reach the final.”
After today's match a new champion will be crowned after Opotiki fell out of the running in last week's semifinal.
