Truck crash at Matata

A truck driver is lucky to have escaped uninjured after his truck crashed through a fence into a row of trees in Matata this morning.

Matata Fire Brigade and St John Ambulance paramedics were called to the crash about 9.30am after the truck ploughed through the fence into a paddock on Pakeha Street.

A caller into SunLive says it appears the driver failed to take a corner on the street, carrying on straight ahead.

'I don't know whether he was asleep or failed the take the corner, but the truck has broken through the fence and the whole top of the cab has been crushed from the impact of the trees.”

Northern Fire Communications shift manager Scott Osmond says the cab of the truck was crushed but the driver was not trapped and able to make it out.

He was checked by St John paramedics at the scene but wasn't taken to hospital.

The fire brigade is still at the scene.
