Pick Rick’s animal tactics

Rick Curach, the councillor, has two heads to his city council re-election campaign using pop-up animals to show his lighter side.

The current councillor, running for re-election in the At Large ward, has this week added another dimension to his quirky ‘Pick Rick' signs by placing camel and bunny heads on his billboards.

Rick Curach is lightening up the last week of elections by replacing his head with a camel and rabbit.

He says it's an attempt to attract voters, and show a bit of a lighter side to the local elections that close this Saturday.

'I thought I would just have a bit of fun in the last week and get people talking about the election, hopefully.”

Rick has lived in Tauranga for 32 years and is serving his fourth term on the Tauranga City Council.

He is hoping the quirky signage will get people talking and raise voters' awareness of the election. He believes people drive past the same old signs and don't take any notice.

'It's just about having a bit of fun. The camel came from a little web search of images and I saw it and thought it was cute. The one with the hat stood out.

'The little bunny rabbit was equally cute, it's something for the children with it being school holidays they might drive past and think it's neat.”

The animal signage is getting good feedback from the community, he says.

'One lady phoned up and she was really concerned asking if someone had done it maliciously. I suppose some people might think that, but I think it's all in good taste really.”

The signage didn't cost Rick any extra to create, as he simply swapped his face for that of the camel and rabbit. The signs have been hopping around to different locations in the city this week.

'It's just a novelty. Elections can get a bit boring towards the end in terms of signage out there. I just wanted to make it a bit lighter.”

From tomorrow anyone is welcome to take one of Rick's signs, as it is the last day for postal votes in the elections.

Meanwhile in the Western Bay of Plenty District Council elections, allegiances have been made clear in some parts of Te Puke.

A large scale sign supporting Mayoral hopeful Mark Boyle has been hung from a building in Jellicoe Street. The sign that reads ‘I voted for Mark Boyle' is a show of support from Te Puke industrialist and developer John Dohnt.

It reads ‘I voted for Mark Boyle'.

You'd have to be a bunny to return this council

A slang definition of a bunny is a mug or dupe. What is it about Tauranga that sees us electing what I think are mostly a bunch of talentless people who then go on to earn a nice living from being a councillor? Sometimes we seem to get candidates of real ability, but they don't seem to stand a chance against self promoters.

Candidate antics

I love animals but I wouldn't vote any of them into Council. There seems to have been enough monkeys there in the past! Instead of marketing ploys, the good people of Tauranga want to know what the candidates stand for. I love animals too but if that's the best Rick can do, he ain't got my vote.
