Wet night for firefighters

Tauranga firefighters are drying off today after a night of water related calls, dealing with burst pipes and a noisy water heater.

Firefighters were called to Devonport Towers shortly after 1am to find the building evacuated and water pouring down the stairwell.

Devonport Towers in Tauranga City was evacuated overnight.

'It was pouring out of a pipe on the 16th floor and cascading down the staircase,” says senior station officer Mark Keller.

'We were there for a wee while just sorting it out, finding the leak, getting everybody back inside.”

Mount Maunganui firefighters were called to a house in Abelia Avenue in Arataki at 2.20am where residents were awakened by the hot water cylinder making a lot of noise.

'We put it down to a pressure relief valve on the cylinder operating,” says Mount Fire Brigade station officer Lindsay Nicol.

Then at 4.09am they were called to Chamberlain Place, a two minute drive from Abelia Avenue, where a burst pipe in a bathroom flooded the end of the house.

'It's a bit strange, three water related calls you know.”

Acting team leader for water services at Tauranga City Council, John Sternberg says there was a pressure spike for the Arataki area supply over night.

It was a seasonal valve adjustment issue and the pressure didn't exceed limits.

Devonport Towers is on a separate supply system. There was no issue with the CBD supply overnight.
